ADHD Goal Setting That Actually Works (Skip SMART Goals)

SMART goals don't work for ADHD

Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, Time-bound. Sounds great in a TED talk. Useless when your brain refuses to start.

The problem isn't that the goal isn't SMART. It's that the goal is visible all at once. ADHD brains see the whole mountain and freeze.

What works instead: locked progression

The TuranForward method only ever shows you one task at a time. You can't see what's next until you finish what's now. This does three things:

  1. Kills overwhelm. One task is never scary.
  2. Triggers curiosity. What's the next quest? You'll find out when you ship.
  3. Forces momentum. No planning paralysis. No optimizing. Just do the thing in front of you.

The 4-step ADHD goal system

  1. Pick the identity, not the outcome. "Become someone who posts videos" beats "Get 10k subscribers."
  2. Make the first quest small enough to be insulting. "Record a 30-second video" not "Plan a content calendar."
  3. Add photo proof. You don't get the next quest until you upload proof.
  4. Cooldown between quests. 6-24 hours of break. ADHD burnout is real — forced rest = sustained momentum.

Why cooldowns matter

ADHD brains hyperfocus, then crash. A 6-hour mandatory break between quests stops you from doing all five tonight and then ghosting the goal for two weeks. Pacing > intensity.
